There are nearly 33 million people in the United States alone who are suffering from hearing loss. Exposure to excessive noise accounts for nearly one third of all these cases.

1. Try to limit the amount of time you are directly exposed to sounds that are over 85 decibels. Sounds that are comparable to 85 decibels are motorcycles or lawn mowers.
2. Avoid environments where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
3. Wear ear protection when you are around extremely noisy environments.
4. Do not sit next to the monitors or amplifiers on the stage at a concert.
5. See an ENT doctor as soon as you notice any changes in your hearing or if you are experiencing any pain in your ears.
6. Make sure the sound coming from your MP3 player is not too loud. If the sound can be heard more than three feet away, it’s too loud for you.
7. Take frequent breaks from loud music or other noises to allow your ears a time of recovery.
8. Never clean your ear canals with cotton buds.
9. Wear ear protection when firing a gun.
10. Make sure children who are prone to ear infections get treatment immediately to avoid a ruptured ear drum and scarring which can cause permanent hearing loss.

Although most people know that hearing loss usually comes with age, few people know what causes hearing loss. The two primary functions of our ears are hearing and balance. As people age, their ears become less effective at distinguishing sounds, especially lower frequency sounds. For some people, hearing loss makes it embarrassing to ask people to repeat themselves, and nearly impossible for them to function in daily life. One in three people over age 65 and half the population 75 years of age and older suffer from acute to severe hearing impairment. While most hearing loss occurs because of damage to the cochlea, the spiral component of the inner ear that helps people hear, many other causes of hearing loss exist. Examples of causes of hearing loss include ear infections, abnormalities of the bones in the ear, cancerous growths in or on the ear, damage to the eardrum, and complications from other diseases, such as auditory neuropathy caused by diabetes. Diminishment of hearing quality may also be genetic, such as deafness passed on from parent to child. Hearing problems may worsen because of overexposure to extremely loud noises. If you are experiencing hearing loss, a doctor can pinpoint the causes.

If you are harming your ears, you may want to consider stopping before you end up with hearing aids. There are many things that can actually harm your ears that you may not be aware of. Loud music can with time cause deafness if you are constantly exposing yourself to it. There are things that are just not meant for your ears. Many people do not know or care until it is too late. Hearing loss is a very common problem that many people end up experiencing, but you do not have to be one of them. You can easily take matters into your own hands and flip to the switch. If you do not want to harm your ears, you need to make sure that you are protecting them each and every way possible. There are so many things that can go wrong. You should even take note of the small things such as cleaning your ears. You need to clean your ears very gently and make sure that you do not stick anything in your ears that can harm your ear drums.

If you are looking to prevent further hearing loss, you may have many options. You do not have to sit there and just suffer. Hearing loss is very common. Hearing aids can be a very good source of hearing. There are also many other ways that people can prevent problems that come along with hearing. If it is possible, you can actually get different forms of communication that can be installed on your computer and even cell phones. There are many programs out there for the deaf, to assist them with hearing loss. These are very common issues, and again, you do not have to sit around and be depressed for the rest of your life. You are going to have to take matters into your own hands and talk to your doctor. They will let you know all of your options that are available. You can make your decision from there. You can also get some type of government assistance if you qualify, and take advantage of the many devices that they offer. Hearing loss can be prevented, but you just have to basically do something about it. The more you speak up, the more than will get done.
